==Combat==

===Initiating Combat===

There are four basic ways that you can find yourself in a combat situation.

Firstly, you may be attacked outright by an aggressive monster. In this case you can choose to stand and fight or run away. To fight, you must right-click on the monster and click the [[Players_Guide_Chapter_2#Action_Menu| Attack]] icon.

Secondly, you may choose to attack an unwitting monster. To initiate combat, you must again right-click on the monster and click the [[Players_Guide_Chapter_2#Action_Menu| Attack]] icon.

Thirdly, you may be challenged to a duel by another player. If you are challenged, you will see a window appear that allows you to either accept or decline the challenge. Once the duel has begun, you will need to target the other player and attack them in the same way you would attack a monster. If your guild and your opponent's guild are at war, no challenge will be necessary for them to attack you!

Lastly, you may wish to attack another player. Unless your guild and your target's guild are at war, you will need to challenge them to a duel. To challenge, use the command '''/challenge''' when you have your opponent targetted. You will be notified once they have accepted or declined. If they accept then the fight is on!

===Stance===

During combat, attacker and victim can change their combat stance, focusing more on attack or on defense. There are five possible combat stances:

'''Bloody'''

: In bloody attack the player focuses all his or her ability on attacking. All blocking, movement and dodging ability gets transferred to attack.

'''Aggressive'''

: In aggressive attack the player focuses his ability more on attacking then defending. His or her blocking ability gets transferred to attack as well as some of movement and dodging ability.

'''Normal'''

: This is the standard, default attack. Attack and defense are as per [[Players_Guide_Chapter_2#Skills_2| skills]] and [[Players_Guide_Chapter_2#Character_Statistics|stats]].

'''Defensive'''

: In defensive attack the player focuses his or her ability more on defending than attacking. Attacking ability gets transferred to blocking, along with some movement and agility.

'''Full Defensive'''

: In full defense the player focuses all his or her ability on defending. All attacking ability, movement and agility is transferred to blocking and avoiding attacks.

You can change your attack stance using the '''/attack''' command. You can specify the stance using '''/attack 1''' (Bloody) up to '''/attack 5''' (Full Defensive). You can change your stance anytime during combat.

===Death===

In the world of [[Players_Guide_Chapter_3#Yliakum| Yliakum]], death is not the end.

When you die through mishap or attack you will reappear in the [[Players_Guide_Chapter_3#Death_Realm| Death Realm]].

===Combat Example===

In this section we will guide you through a possible encounter with a Rat.

Pictured below is our first encounter with a Rat. Be careful though - the Rat will notice your presence and attack!

<center>[[Image:rat.jpg]]</center>

The first thing to do is right-click on the Rat with your mouse, and then choose '''Attack''' from the action menu when it appears:

<center>[[Image:combat2.jpg]]</center>

Now the fight is on! Keep a careful eye on your health and your opponent's health always. if your health gets too low, you will need to heal or run away!

Finally we have killed the Rat. Now we can [[Players_Guide_Chapter_2#Looting| loot]] the corpse. By looting the corpses of monsters that you kill, you can acquire items to sell or trade for money with which you can purchase equipment.

===Looting===

To loot a corpse, right click on it and when the action menu appears, choose '''Loot'''.

<center>[[Image:looting1.jpg]]</center>

A window will appear displaying the items that can be looted from the corpse. Take whichever items you want and then you can close the window.

<center>[[Image:looting2.jpg]]</center>

Use the right button to take specific items and the left button to randomly distribute the loot among your [[Glossary#Group| ''Group'']].

You cannot loot a corpse that was not killed by yourself or a member of your [[Glossary#Group| ''Group'']].

Bear in mind that eventually the corpse will disappear from the world, and the monster may reappear. You will need to loot the corpse before that happens.

I think it's a good idea to rename the chapters from counters like [[Players_Guide_Chapter_1]] to their actual name (in this case " Installation"). I don't see a reason for the current titles as the numbers are given in the TOC.
Suggestions? --[[User:Kerol|Kerol]] 07:54, 2 October 2006 (EDT)

Agreed, good idea! (Is there a wiki-wide update-link-when-link-target-changes-function? )

I also recommend to omit the big fat headings with links to the other chapters. A separate "Related Links" chapter looks much nicer.

Another suggestions: Transforming the main chapters (I. - VI., App. A, B) into categories and divide the LONG pages into several pages, so that one sub-chapter at 2nd level (e.g. 1.1) equals 1 page belonging to the appropriate category.

--[[User:Geri|Geri]] 12:47, 3 October 2006 (EDT)

I see! That's what came into my mind, too: Transforming the main chapters into link pages to sub-chapters. Perfect! So, I think it will be OK if I transfer Combat, Magic, NPCs, Cheating to their own pages.

And: Does this apply to the other main chapters as well?

Geri We are working on dividing the pages as you said look at what we have so far for [[Players_Guide_Chapter_2]]

I see! That's what came into my mind, too: Transforming the main chapters into link pages to sub-chapters. Perfect! So, I think it will be OK if I transfer Combat, Magic, NPCs, Cheating to their own pages.
As far as i know most of what is done in one OS is done almost the same in the others when it comes to set up and updating (commands to get to them might change)

--illori

Hints:
* 1. "Chaptering" with automatic TOC works in the discussion as well
* 2. It's good wiki style to sign discussion contributions with two hyphens followed by four tildes:<nowiki> --~~~ </nowiki>. This automatically adds your user name, or your IP if you're not loggged in, and date & time.
== Renaming Chapter I. from "Installation" to "Installation and Configuration" or "Installation and Setup"? ==

Since this is what it actually contains.

--[[User:Geri|Geri]] 15:56, 1 October 2006 (EDT)

I think it's a good idea to rename the chapters from counters like [[Players_Guide_Chapter_1]] to their actual name (in this case " Installation"). I don't see a reason for the current titles as the numbers are given in the TOC.
Suggestions? --[[User:Kerol|Kerol]] 07:54, 2 October 2006 (EDT)

Agreed, good idea! (Is there a wiki-wide update-link-when-link-target-changes-function? )

I also recommend to omit the big fat headings with links to the other chapters. A separate "Related Links" chapter looks much nicer.
Kerol, could you please explain logically, why this should be as you demand.

I believe its better to maintain those sections with different topics on different "files" (well, they are really just database entries). That way you keep a certain overview when you dont melt all those different topics together. Long pages tend to be read less careful for example.

If you want to export everything to obtain a neat XML file afterwards, which can then be fed into the client releases, why dont you just use scripts that do the job for you, or maybe ingame help XML files could be split as well ..

just my opinion, discussion welcome!
I agree to Fellice. One page for each chapter makes some pages (Ch.I., Ch.II. & Ch.III.) too long, which is not good wiki style and not too user-friendly.

Concerning the XML topic, maybe this helps, too: ''Note that it is possible to obtain XML-formatted output from MySQL'' [http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/xml-functions.html]
Keyboard Controls seem to be not up to date!

* Strafing is not Q/E but A/D - at least in my client's default keyboard control settings. I did not change any of them! Maybe someone can confirm?

* Autorun has an additional feature, when pressing Shift-R the character walks instead of running. It also switches into Walk mode after ''releasing'' any "shift" key while in autorun mode, but there is no way to switch back to running again, other than hitting "R" twice. Maybe this is a bug, i will report it to the [http://bugs.hydlaa.com Plaeshift Bugtracker] right now (in case it isnt already to be found there) ...

Regarding the keyboard controls - they have changed with the new release, yes. It is not a bug, the Player Guide on the official page was not updated accordingly after the changes (due to lack of time perhaps). And since the pages in the wiki were taken from there, they are also out-of-date (for now at least). As a matter of fact this is one of the main purposes of this wiki, besides adding and correcting mistakes - to actually update the existing documentation as a community effort.

As for the help page needing to be in one place, I don't know the reasons, but I suppose that the team may want to transform it automatically with the help of a script into something that can be put both in-game and in the official Help page on planeshift.it. But from what I remember, the commands there are pretty thorough and I was under the impression they were automatically generated from the programmers' comments. Might be wrong though.

Just my two cents on the matter.
Are you aware of that [[Ingame Help]] is almost identical to [[Player Commands]]? To be more precise: [[Player Commands]] is a subset of [[Ingame Help]].

'''Keyboard Controls''' and '''Other User Command /repair''' is the difference, as far as I can see. I think the first is intentionally, the latter seems to me like one of the things that can happen if you store identical information more than once.
I think the best solution is to <nowiki>#REDIRECT</nowiki> [[Player Commands]] to [[Ingame_Help#Player_Commands]].

== Keyboard Controls not up to date ==

--[[User:Fellice|Fellice]] 05:34, 24 September 2006 (EDT)

== Ingame Help vs. Player Commands ==

The purpose of this list is to teach people what common MMORPG and PS words mean, and how to use them. If you have any suggestions to add onto this list, please leave a message on the discussion page. Make sure you are suggesting only MMO and PS-related words! Things like “AFK,” “TY” or “TTFN” don't belong here, as they are regular internet acronyms.
After a period of dedication and contribution to the PS Team, the WTB can become Official members at discretion of the leader of that department

|-
| MP
| "Want To Be" development team members. They work on the dev team just as "full" devs would and have access to everything the others have access to - the only major difference is that "full" developers are also members of Atomic Blue, the registered non-profit organization behind PlaneShift. After a period of dedication and contribution to the PS Team, the WTB can become Official members at discretion of the leader of that department

Just wondering why you made the page [[chat]] it is not that usefull right now. and why did you make a category for commands? We are working on redoing a lot of the players guide and since none of us have seen on irc we dont know what you are thinking and you dont know what we are thinking. If you have time please stop off on the irc channel #planeshift-wiki to discuss this with us.
I created [[chat]] because a fully agree to what is mentioned in Kerol's Official PSWIKI thread:

"- Keep in mind that those docs should be understandable by 9 to 99 year old people - KISS (keep it simple and stupid)!"

According to my experiences it is simpler to find something if there are more paths leading to it.

I created the category "command" since I found it in the Special page: Wanted Categories. But, I agree: the two links referring to it may have been established unintentionally while drafting, making this category obsolete once.

What I'm thinking? I like PlaneShift. Not only the game, but also the idea behind. I like the Open Community and its spirit. I think it's only fair to pay back a bit, compared to the many helpful things I (we) received from the community until now. That's why I decided to contribute to this wiki.

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with IRC (Does this disqualify me?). And, since I'm not a native English speaker, chatting in English is not my preferred way of communication. I think I can make my thoughts, ideas, arguments, etc. more clear in a "letter" form.

No worries, not using IRC does not diqualify you in any way, this is supposed to be a community effort after all. However, if you could learn to use it, it would help very much since it is easier to exchange ideas "live". In any event, using Talk pages or Discussion pages might yield the same result.

Now, about modifying articles, one can modify them however he/she wants. It is customary to leave descriptions usually, but again, unless the modifications are huge, there's no real need to justify every action. However, when modifying categories things get more delicate. It is fairly good practice to keep them in one place and not complicate things unnecessarily in my opinion (even if this is a small wiki with few articles).
just a small hint there is a search feature and i think it might help decrease the need for pages to point out each and every little detail like making a [[chat]] page or many catagories. Just remember we do not have unlimited space so if we can make a few pages as possible it might end up helping people in the long run. If you dont link a page to the main page most people will not see it or though a page that makes the link necessage. If you want help setting up irc just let us know and we can help you do that so you can work with us there also.
Installed Firefox extension Chatzilla. Tried to connect to Freenode --> [ERROR] msg.reconnecting.in ... repeatedly.
Most probably since ports 6667 are definitely not open on our firewall --> takes a little time to open it.

I visited #planeshift-wiki yesterday. There was not too much traffic there. Of course, chat is a real-time medium. But when is real-time for me, you, other folks around the world? And, due to the real-time character all information is gone once you log out, isn't it? (Or are there logs available to be able to look through the history of a channel?) So, I think more durable discussion media are far better, like forums or the discussion pages here.

Maybe you should edit the section on a different page, change it along your ideas and then we all have a look at it and compare with the old layout. If the new layout is generally accepted we can either reditect or copy the content over the old page and delete the work-page again.
Basically a good idea. But, imagine the following (theoretically, I didn't check whether this can happen with the current contents):

1. General
* Do command D-'''W'''...<br>

1.2 '''M'''ac

*Do command D-'''U'''...<br>

--> Not very straightforward, compared to the actual activity.

An option:

1. General

* Do command A...<br>
* <links to B-W, B-M, B-U><br>
* Do command C...<br>
* <links to D-W, D-M, D-U><br>
* Do command E...<br>

1.1 '''W'''in

* <link to A><br>
* Do command B-'''W'''...<br>

...and so on...

--> Still not straightforward, but with quicker jumping at least.

However, both could be too sophisticated for the "normal" user. Maybe even worse if not all OSs need the same type of commands.

--[[User:Geri|Geri]] 14:51, 28 September 2006 (EDT)

As far as i know most of what is done in one OS is done almost the same in the others when it comes to set up and updating (commands to get to them might change)

--illori

Hints:
* 1. "Chaptering" with automatic TOC works in the discussion as well
* 2. It's good wiki style to sign discussion contributions with two hyphens followed by four tildes: <pre>--~~~~</pre> This automatically adds your user name, or your IP if you're not loggged in, and date & time.
