General Questions
Technical Questions
The game is crashing every now and then, what should I do?
Try disabling sound from PlaneShift Setup application.

Where I can report critical bugs, or submit ideas, wishes or future requests?
Submit them to the Bugtracker. Be sure that your client is up to date and first search the bug tracker with the "Query Bugs" > "Go to the Advanced Query Page" that your request isn't already submitted.

The server goes link dead, what should I do?
The developers are fixing bugs so they have to restart it from time to time. It should be up in within few minutes after restart.

Where to get my lost password?
You can have your password reset by using the last link on http://laanx.fragnetics.com/register/

Client tells me it's old. I just downloaded it?
After downloading the full binary, use the PlaneShift Updater program to check if there are new updates available. You can find the Updater in the PlaneShift Program group (on Windows: Start>Plane Shift>Updater). It will update your client to the latest version.

I need more character slots because I can't delete my old chars?
Only administrators and very high-level GMs can delete characters so try submitting a petition, be careful when creating character and only upload when you are happy with your choices.

I can't type the @ for my username in the game!
For those using AZERTY keyboards who are unable to type the @ character, try Alt + Ctrl + 2. If it fails, go to the PlaneShift directory and open 'planeshift.cfg'. Edit the line that looks like "Planeshift.Connection.User = m_y@email.blah" to include your email address.

The Game is not displaying, black screens or video driver crashes, what to do?
Try turning off Vertex Buffer Objects in the PlaneShift Setup application.

The PlaneShift Updater crashes when trying to update, what's this?
Try running the PlaneShift Updater(Recover Mode) icon if you are on Windows, otherwise run the Updater in non-GUI mode; with the -auto command line option.

How can I become a member of the PS Team?
First go to http://www.planeshift.it/helpus_recruit.html. Choose a certain department that you would most like to and be able to help out in. E-mail the department leader asking to join. You must submit a sort of portfolio and a resume. You will get more information from the person you e-mailed after that.

What does a W.T.B. member mean?
It means Want To Be member. You become a WTB after passing a first test to prove your skills and after contributing some good asset. After a period of dedication and contribution to the PS Team, the WTB can become Official members at discretion of the leader of that department.

If you are a Public Relations Member, what are you?
A Public Relations Member means that you advertise the site and other things about Plane Shift and you get information out and get everyone excited about Plane Shift. It includes dealing with press, writing short informative articles, giving news to the community.

Another player is verbally abusing me, what can I do?
Use the /petition description_here command to request a GM to deal with that person. In the meantime, use the /add_ignore playername_here command to block the person from contacting you.

Can I use the art for my game?
No you can not use it sorry. You need to make your own art for your own game.

Chapter VI. Troubleshooting
General Questions
Why have all the crystals gone?
There are no crystals in the Crystal Blue release like in the previous Molecular Blue release. The new currency is now Tria. Anyway you may still find Emeralds and Crystals down in the Laanx Dungeon.

Can I gain experience other than by fighting?
Yes, experience points are also awarded when you mine minerals and complete quests.

Can I buy a house?
No, it's a distant feature so don't expect it soon.

What's a GM?
GMs are Game Masters, they have special powers depending on their rank that they use to keep peace and help people in PlaneShift.

Can I be a GM?
GMs are picked by developers for being useful advisors. When you become a knowledgeable and experienced player, you can become an advisor using /advisormode on command. Then use /advice player_name to answer problems and earn advisor points. Don't look forward to being a GM until you worked a long time and regularly as an Advisor in the help channel.

How can I avoid fall damage?
Don't run down staircases, don't jump from high places and be careful when travelling dangerous paths where it may be easy to slip.

How do I open doors?
Doors that are shut cannot currently be opened.

How can I make money?
Money can be gained from looting dead monsters and selling what you find, mining ore, completing quests or selling the proceeds of your crafting.

How do I crouch?
The default key to crouch is [Right-Shift]. Hold down to make your character creep slowly while moving.

Why do I always die if I go into the well in the temple; there used to be a dungeon there?
The dungeon still exists; however the fall from the temple well might be fatal depending on your Health and Armor. There is a secret entrance to the dungeon somewhere else in Hydlaa.

Where are the sewers?
There are two entrances to the sewers. One is near the Tavern. You will have to find them yourself.

What happens when I die?
You are thrown away into the Death Realm, which you must escape in order to return back to normal world. Don't worry it's not hard.

How can I change my hotkeys?
You can change almost any hotkey from the Options Window.

How can I create shortcuts (macros)?
Right click on any button in the Shortcuts Window in game to change its name and assign commands to it.

How can I create an account to play?
The accounts in PlaneShift are free of charge. You can create an account with a valid email address at http://laanx.fragnetics.com/register/. See Section 1.5, “Creating An Account” for more information.

Where can I mine?
Minerals can usually be found at rocky outcrops. Exploring to find ore veins is part of the fun of PlaneShift!

How do I mine?
While standing on an appropriate dig site use /dig for mineral_to_dig command, e.g. for gold you'll use /dig for gold.

Where can I buy weapons?
You can buy them from Harnquist the smith in Hydlaa or the dwarf in first shop to the left in Ojaveda.

Where can I buy mining tools?
You can buy them from Harnquist the smith in Hydlaa.

I am having no success mining, what's wrong?
Be patient, everything is hard to being with. Your success in mining depends on your skill and quality of pickaxe used. Try raising your mining skills or buy a more expensive pickaxe.

Where's the new city called Ojaveda?
You will need to find the Hydlaa gate and explore far, far from the city of Hydlaa to find Ojaveda.

All players having same race look exactly same, is it possible to look different?
Not At the moment. Character customization is currently not available in Crystal Blue.

Can only skills like sword, axe, etc. be bought or can you buy strength, endurance, will, etc.?
You can also buy training for strength, endurance and other stats, you just have to find the right trainer.

Are there Guilds in Plane Shift?
Yes, everyone can create or join a guild in the game. You need to use the Guild Window.

What are Guilds?
Guilds are pretty much another name for clans. Characters with a good amount of (in-game) money and a number of followers can build a new guild. They can invite friends to be part of it, giving them titles. A guild is normally associated to a job in Ylikaum society, like merchants, weapon smithy, etc. But a guild can be also created for other reasons, knowledge, defense, and politics.

Races
Yliakum History
First Epoch: Laanx and Talad
Laanx and Talad were Gods before the races ever existed in Yliakum. Laanx and Talad were beautiful and harmonious; they were inquisitive and always looking for new knowledge to enrich their eternal lives. Laanx was a tall and perfectly shaped female with long, white hair as silky as the threads of a spider's web. Her lunar skin reflected the azure beams of the crystal and refracted the light into hypnotic patterns as alluring as her dancing, ruby-colored eyes. A thin silver band clasped Laanx's left ankle. She was evanescent, cold and yet yielding, light and ethereal like the evening air.

Talad was like an ebony statue, with powerful muscles and long, proportioned bones. Thick black curls cascaded down over his broad shoulders and down his back, and a thick gold armlet clasped Talad's right bicep. Talad was solid, warm and determined, dense and impetuous as a river of molten lava.

Guided by an ancient and powerful god, named Vodl, god of the future events, they discovered one quiet planet with a crystal column full of energy and mystery. Together, they explored the depths of the planet where the majestic obelisk has its roots, full to the brim and quivering with the azure energy.

Together, they reached the lower end of the column and discovering a rocky niche that contained the luminous and faceted extremity that now gives life- energy to Yliakum. Talad and Laanx realized the nature of the crystal and wanted to create a prosperous dominion with people to worship them. Other gods, older and more powerful than they, told them about great tasks they would have to perform when their worshipers became ready to follow their directions. Blinded by the possibility of creating a new world, the young gods Laanx and Talad didn't ask any other details, or pay much attention to the warnings. Therefore, they used their powers to enlarge the niche and created the huge cave comprised of eight levels.

They diverted the courses of the underground rivers to feed the fertile and rich land that they had placed on the rock to make it suitable for life. Everything was made to host the people that Talad and Laanx wished to create, but the land was still empty. They were unaware of a huge maze of tunnels present in the crust of the world, later called the Stone Labyrinths, where other creatures were already lurking in the dark.

Second Epoch: The Division
Talad and Laanx prayed to Vodl to lure some races from the other gods and to bring them to Yliakum. Vodl agreed their requests, but in exchange wished for Talad to become one of his servants and Laanx to become one of his lovers. Laanx and Talad accepted the exchange, because Vodl was a kind master and a pleasant consort.

After leaving Vodl's palace, Talad and Laanx noticed that Vodl had honored the promise, but a long time had to elapse before the people reached Yliakum and they were impatient. Laanx, young and very pretty, had fascinated the ancient Vodl and he'd taught her that the energy of the crystal could be used to create life.

She wanted to make Talad happy, for he was more restless and found the wait more unbearable then she did. To surprise and amaze him, she drew the incommensurable power of the azure crystal as much as she could and, in secret, mimicked the rituals of Vodl to give life to some creatures reproduced in her image. The new people matured and reproduced, they were nice-looking and had a quiet behavior, like their creator, and they called themselves "Lemurs".

When Talad discovered Laanx's creation, he was surprised and astonished, but he was also saddened because Laanx had her people and he did not, even though she insisted she had created the Lemurs for both of them. He harnessed power from the crystal too, going even farther than Laanx has dared. She thought that Vodl had taught Talad the secret of the energy and let him work, because she trusted him and she did not want him to be sad. But she was wrong. When Talad, imbued with the crystal's power, came close to her to create the first creature of his people, a tempest of chaos burst forth from the god's hands and hit Laanx on her face, penetrating deeply into her body, and she became forever disfigured.

A new people were born from the rocks thanks to Talad, and they called themselves "Kran". But Laanx was not beautiful anymore and she fell down into a deep depression that shattered her heart like a mirror. Mindless of Talad's pain in causing her harm, she denied her being, her femininity, her people, and drove away the harmony from her heart.

She retired to wander in the Stone Labyrinths, and many Lemurs went with her. She dressed in a thick red tunic and shaped a mask without features to hide her features. In her exile, she wrote the Book of Names for, even if she was confused and her mind distraught, she did not forget her desire to be worshiped by the people. Hence Laanx, the Masquerade God, wild and inflexible, began to brood over what happened.

Third Epoch: The Realm of Laanx
Laanx spent a very long time in the Stone Labyrinths trying to bring the serenity back into her heart. Then Talad tried to approach her, trying to recognize, in the red dressed figure what remained of the beautiful god. But he saw simply an empty dress, and this disturbed him.

-There must be a remedy. Come back and we will be One again.

Laanx spoke with a cold, male voice:

-You don't know what you did, Talad. It is not possible anymore to be One. I don't know you, and you don't know me. Go away and do not annoy me anymore.-

Many other times Laanx rejected Talad's entreaties to reconcile with him. Talad's insistence seemed insulting to Laanx, who was already annoyed in his painful isolation. Laanx forgot the millenarian friendship with Talad and sought the loneliness even more deeply in the bowels of the earth, heedless of the large number of Lemurs that followed him, worshiping and offering gifts to him.

Talad gave up any hope to be reconciled with the old friend and, now alone, turned his thoughts to the people left in the town they had created. He called it "Hydlaa", the name of the most powerful Glyphs, that Vodl had revealed to Laanx and that led Talad to ignore prudence to satisfy his pride. Waiting for the day when the other peoples would come, he forged magical power into many shapes, suitable to be used by the mortals to help them to survive underground: he created the Glyphs.

After many generations of the Lemurs had passed, Laanx wandered into a cave that was hundreds of times bigger than the one he created, where beings without a name dwelt. At the top he spied a huge stalactite that occupied one third of the vault, and which produced a thin rain of clear water. It was the conic block of rock that held Yliakum.

At the middle of the cave, he saw a deep lake full of life, whose shores were a fertile soil. The Lemurs believed that their god had led them to a new home. Their praises and thanks to Laanx echoed in the cave and many sacrifices were made.

In that moment Laanx became aware of the presence of his followers, and he was stricken by their faith and ingenuity. His heart became a little softer, and he gave his people many powerful and useful things to brighten the cave and make the lake and its shores a place to live. The Lemurs multiplied rapidly, built the ten towns of Kadaikos, and they became a prosperous and numerous populations.

For a period, Laanx ruled Kadaikos harshly, giving to the Lemurs inflexible laws and a strict hierarchy. After discovering the delight of ruling his people, the Masked God became greedy for power. He remembered the promise made by Vodl to send people to Yliakum. They were supposed to arrive in few decades, and he decided to take them all, to lead them to Kadaikos and to become their god. Thus, he journeyed back to the Stone Labyrinths near Yliakum to await the arrival of the first settlers.

After the departure of Laanx, a black flame appeared in Kadaikos. Everyone believed that it was a part of Laanx soul and was supposed to rule his people till his return. The black flame was sentient and easily took control of the people in Kadaikos.

Fourth Epoch: The Civilization
Taking care not to reveal his presence to Talad, Laanx observed Yliakum and saw with disappointment that some people had arrived.

Talad was more cautious and less restless after the catastrophic incident that parted him from Laanx. Under his guidance Hydlaa filled quickly: besides the strong presence of Lemurs and Kran, Ylians and Enkidukai arrived from the Stone Labyrinths. Talad sent his Incarnations in material form to spread magic and laws amongst them; thanks to this many altars made of precious metals were forged to pray to Talad.

Seeing this, Laanx became jealous of his old friend: Talad had the harmony that he had lost and at times Laanx felt the need to have it back.

Observing his regular and quiet face, Laanx remembered with nostalgia the time in which he was a beautiful lunar god. He got angry, cursing Talad and all Yliakum, and swore that, since Talad made him an unhappy and jealous being, he must suffer the consequences.

During his dull waiting, Laanx investigated the column of blue light above Yliakum, trying to find a way to increase his power by using that infinite source of magic. Since Talad wanted to have mastery on glyphs, Laanx would control the pure and violent power of the Crystal.

While investigating, he became aware of two remarkable spells that were created in the neighborhood of the city. He had never seen anything like them: these seemed to twist or tear holes in the fabric of the universe, creating portals or passages leading to remote and unknown places. The first was inside Yliakum, so Talad surely has already noticed it, but the second was located in the Stone Labyrinths. Laanx decided to study the unknown phenomenon and, after seeking the portal, he found himself in front of a liquid surface similar to a mirror that radiated blue light: an irregular and rippling mercury bubble, thin and vertical, surrounded by a powerful aura of magic. The god remained there for a long time to observe.

At the same time, Talad looked through the eyes of one of his avatars and saw that a curious being was emerging from the second portal, followed by dozens of creatures of the same race. The appearance was close to a Human or a Lemur, but the creature had horns and a tail and black, oily skin. The avatar realized that those beings seemed to be civilized, although their behavior was strange; their name was "Diaboli". After they passed through the portal, they though to have finally reached the "promised land", and they began to celebrate in a very noisy way, eating and drinking abundantly.

The Diaboli were lively and intelligent, although they were meddlers and they didn't understand the concept of "other people's ownership". They integrated themselves with the rising society of Yliakum, and discovered common features with Lemurs in their thirst for new aesthetics experience, and with the Enkidukai who were wild and instinctive. All the Talad's efforts to make the Diaboli his followers failed. The Diaboli were inclined to disappear whenever someone began to discuss about religion.

In the Stone Labyrinths, the Masked God realized that the two portals had been created by Vodl's magic powers. Laanx asked himself if in future he would be powerful enough to create something similar, and ambition and greed persuaded him even more deeply.

From other tunnels in the Stone Labyrinths arrived people with copper skin, almond-shaped eyes and sharpened ears. They were refugees from a land called Dermoria, driven away by a horde of nomadic knights. They carried with them water, seeds and cattle, and they had been a nomadic race until they found a magic portal and decided to explore new, unknown lands. To prevent them from reaching Yliakum, Laanx sent one of his avatars to lead lure them into a cave full of water and game. He returned to study the portal, close to understanding its principle.

Time passed, and two big families of short men arrived. They had long beards and were solid and tireless. One of the two groups was called "Hammerwielders", the other "Stonebreakers". They decided to settle down in a place inside the Stone Labyrinths. These short men - or Dwarves - told stories about a group of tall men who dwelled in the Labyrinths and called themselves Xacha. Their skin was as white as chalk and they were rich in knowledge and traditions but too weak to live underground. In the Dwarves' opinion, they would be extinct soon.

Hearing this, Laanx went to these men personally; he didn't want to run the risk of loosing people that could be valuable. He found a few hundred of these people. They were desperate, almost without food, and resigned to ending the glorious history of their race in a moist alley. Laanx revealed himself of them and showed them all his power. The Xacha followed him without exception and he became their god.

Laanx was meditating intensely in front of the portal when its surface trembled for the first time. He watched a creature slowly rising from the portal. This creature was emaciated and translucent like a ghost, but seemed to solidify progressively. It seemed to suffer for passing through the portal, and it didn't seem to have noticed Laanx.

The being was bent by a spasm when it noticed the red-dressed person, hidden in the shadow, that was observing it. It stayed motionless, without stopping to scan the god, and it didn't seem frightened.

Laanx spoke, showing completely his true essence. - I'm Laanx - she said - and I'm your god.-

The creature gazed resentfully and silently, and then sat on a rock with its chin in its hands.

Seeing that the creature refused to follow his orders, Laanx became enraged and destroyed the creature by whispering a single word.

During the following days, many other Klyros passed through the portal. Each time, Laanx tried to impose his will. Many of them were corrupted, tempted in many ways, or were destroyed or tortured, but none of them yielded to the god's will. It seemed their pride did not allow them to bend to any god. Laanx saw inside them a splinter of the delirium that had taken possession of him and, even though he hated them for their indifference, he did not utterly destroy their race. Before leaving them to their destiny, he taught them the way to Yliakum, sure that they would create some troubles to Talad, whom he now considered an enemy.

Fifth Epoch: The Two Temples
In the City of the Azure Sun, the people increased their population and their knowledge under Talad's silent guidance. Many of them - except the Diaboli - slowly gave up the faith in their previous gods to worship the god of the Glyphs. There were people already in four of the eight levels and soon there was not enough food for all of them. Many hunters thought to venture in the Stone Labyrinths to look for game. The first two levels of Yliakum - the only ones where it was possible to farm - were worked more intensely. On the first level, the stolid Ylians claimed the absolute ownership of the ground that they were farming, refusing to share with other races. They built fences and walls, and began to look at books about armies and armed defense. The Enkidukai that lived in the same area were driven away and this was considered an intrusion in their freedom. The tension between the two races increased, and some of them clashed, but Talad was able to control their anger and to bring back the stability.

Laanx observed with interest what was happening in Yliakum, and decided that it was the right moment to present himself again. He was sure that Talad would receive him warmly, and he would be able to take advantage of this.

For many years, Laanx observed in a subdued way what the Xacha were doing. Some of them, circumvented extinction and went back to their ancient traditions, while the others spontaneously created a clergy and faith based on the Book of Names. The head of this second group was a handsome young man named Galeran Tarbius, endowed with endless charisma and with an overwhelming will power. Laanx was immediately interested in him and one day he appeared to him. When Laanx left Galeran, his eyes sparkled with mystic fury, and his body glittered of the chaotic power of raw magic.

Galeran had the power to transmit his fanaticism to the most possessed of his followers. In their opinion, Laanx was the god that had given new life to their race and therefore had the right to claim their lives whenever it was necessary.

Galeran led the Xacha to Yliakum and there, they settled on the first level and began immediately to use their ancient knowledge to built an iron temple consecrated to Laanx.

Talad was worshiped and welcome in the whole of Yliakum; therefore there were statues, representations and places consecrated to him everywhere. But never before that moment had Talad thought to build a temple or to encourage his followers to build one. When the Xacha began to build the temple to Laanx, Talad felt control of his people's hearts slipping away. Many of his people, curious and charmed by Galeran's power, began to worship Laanx and to forget what Talad had made for them. Talad retired to meditate and, with the power of his Glyphs, to plan the most majestic fortress ever built, a building that would show the power of the Glyphs and the strength of the stone, the element from which the Kran were created. After years of meditation, Talad created a tremendous wave of heat that melted the secular rock of the walls of the first level and molded this rock in the name of his chosen people. As it cooled, the wall formed a plethora of drawings and arabesques interspersed with shimmering crystals. These crystals still glow, illuminating the Temple with their light, showing the power of Talad.

Skills
Combat
Initiating Combat
There are four basic ways that you can find yourself in a combat situation.

Firstly, you may be attacked outright by an aggressive monster. In this case you can choose to stand and fight or run away. To fight, you must right-click on the monster and click the Attack icon.

Secondly, you may choose to attack an unwitting monster. To initiate combat, you must again right-click on the monster and click the Attack icon.

Thirdly, you may be challenged to a duel by another player. If you are challenged, you will see a window appear that allows you to either accept or decline the challenge. Once the duel has begun, you will need to target the other player and attack them in the same way you would attack a monster. If your guild and your opponent's guild are at war, no challenge will be necessary for them to attack you!

Lastly, you may wish to attack another player. Unless your guild and your target's guild are at war, you will need to challenge them to a duel. To challenge, use the command /challenge when you have your opponent targetted. You will be notified once they have accepted or declined. If they accept then the fight is on!

Stance
During combat, attacker and victim can change their combat stance, focusing more on attack or on defense. There are five possible combat stances:

Bloody

: In bloody attack the player focuses all his or her ability on attacking. All blocking, movement and dodging ability gets transferred to attack.

Aggressive

: In aggressive attack the player focuses his ability more on attacking then defending. His or her blocking ability gets transferred to attack as well as some of movement and dodging ability.

Normal

: This is the standard, default attack. Attack and defense are as per skills and stats.

Defensive

: In defensive attack the player focuses his or her ability more on defending than attacking. Attacking ability gets transferred to blocking, along with some movement and agility.

Full Defensive

: In full defense the player focuses all his or her ability on defending. All attacking ability, movement and agility is transferred to blocking and avoiding attacks.

You can change your attack stance using the /attack command. You can specify the stance using /attack 1 (Bloody) up to /attack 5 (Full Defensive). You can change your stance anytime during combat.

Death
In the world of Yliakum, death is not the end.

When you die through mishap or attack you will reappear in the Death Realm.

Combat Example
In this section we will guide you through a possible encounter with a Rat.

Pictured below is our first encounter with a Rat. Be careful though - the Rat will notice your presence and attack!

<center></center>

The first thing to do is right-click on the Rat with your mouse, and then choose Attack from the action menu when it appears:

<center></center>

Now the fight is on! Keep a careful eye on your health and your opponent's health always. if your health gets too low, you will need to heal or run away!

Finally we have killed the Rat. Now we can loot the corpse. By looting the corpses of monsters that you kill, you can acquire items to sell or trade for money with which you can purchase equipment.

Looting
To loot a corpse, right click on it and when the action menu appears, choose Loot.

<center></center>

A window will appear displaying the items that can be looted from the corpse. Take whichever items you want and then you can close the window.

<center></center>

Use the right button to take specific items and the left button to randomly distribute the loot among your Group.

You cannot loot a corpse that was not killed by yourself or a member of your Group.

Bear in mind that eventually the corpse will disappear from the world, and the monster may reappear. You will need to loot the corpse before that happens.

Character Statistics
Skills
Learning Skills
PlaneShift implements a system of character progression though skills, training and progression points.

There are basically four stages of learning a new skill, or improving upon an existing one:

Experience

: Experience Points are awarded for doing certain tasks. You can think of this as being like XP in other games, but with some important additional features.
At the most fundamental level, Experience Points are awarded to players each time they successfully kill monsters, execute skills, explore the world and complete quests.
Every new character will begin the game with 0% experience.

Progression Points

: Progression Points can be used by the player to purchase training, special maneuvers, stat increases and so on. It's nothing more than a reflection of the experience you have gained.
As you gain Experience Points, you will also accumulate Progression Points.
Every new character will begin the game with five Progression Points to allocate.
Progression Points are used each time you train.

Theoretical Knowledge

: This represents the "book learning" in a certain skill. For example, in the first rank of sword skill you can have the "left to right slash" only. At the second rank, you can have "jump forward and dive" and so on.
Every skill has a balance of knowledge and practice required to master it. Some skills may require more practice than knowledge and some might require more knowledge than practice. For example, we can say that herbalism requires more knowledge than practice, so it could be "80% knowledge and 20% practice", while unarmed fighting could be "30% knowledge and 70% practice".

You spend your Progression Points by going to a trainer or some other NPC. and paying the Progression Points and money required for training. This will give you theoretical knowledge. For each Progression Point you spend with a trainer, you will gain theoretical knowledge in a certain skill.

Practical Knowledge

: Represents the player's real-world expertise. For a given rank, you cannot start collecting practical knowledge before accumulating all the theoretical knowledge for that rank.
When a player has learned all the theory and all the practice necessary, he or she will gain a new skill rank. This means that the player will have to use the skill in game for a certain amount of time (or number of times) before the skill is fully developed.

Training
Once you have gained some Progression Points through experience, you can use trainers to improve your skills.

To train, walk close to an NPC, right-click on them, and click the Train icon that appears. Alternatively, target them and enter the /train command in the Chat Window or click the Train button in your Shortcut Window. If the NPC is a trainer, a training window skill appear with all the skills listed that the NPC can train.

When this window appears, click on the skill you wish to improve and click the Buy Skill button at the top of the training window. If you have sufficient Progression Points and capacity for more theoretical knowledge, you will advance in that skill's theory.

Weapons Skills
A character can choose to learn one or more "groups" of weapons. Having access to the group gives the same skill also to all weapons contained in that group. This skill is used in combat when fighting with a weapon of the selected group. There's no limit in the number of groups a character can learn.

Every weapon type has a different efficency based on the armor (skin, clothes, chain, plate, etc.) that it hits. So a falchion can be more effective on a certain monster or opponent than a mace, even if the mace has an higher base damage.

: Used for: Halberd, partisan, pike / spear, polearm, rake, trident and voulge.
Description: Almost any weapon as long as a person or longer requires this skill.
Advantages: Excellent for defense.
Disadvantages: Slower weapons and harder to learn.

Disadvantages: Slower to use.

Armor Skills
A character can choose to learn one or more "groups" of armor. Having access to the group gives the same skill also to all armors contained in that group. This skill is used in combat when fighting with armor of the selected group. There's no limit in the number of groups a character can learn.

Each armor has a base penalty to agility. Increasing your skill in using armor you can drop the penalty. You can get the penalty to zero only with light armor. Other types of armors will always give you some hindrance.

Groups are: Light armor, medium armor, heavy armor and shield handling.

Arcane Lore Skills
Arcane Lore skills express the knowledge in manipulating the glyphs to cast spells and to discover new ones. There is one skill for each Way.

There is much more information on these skills in the Magic section.

Each skill represents proficiency in one of the Ways of magic. The skills are: Crystal Way, Dark Way, Azure Way, Red Way, Blue Way and Brown Way.

Physical Abilities
Body Development

: Determines the health of your body and provides you with more Hit Points. Whenever you train this skill you spend time to work out and to enhance your health.

Miscellaneous skills
Mining

: Your ability to find natural resources by mining the land.

Inactive Skills
You will see many skills listed in your Skills Windows than are listed above. The reason for this is that many of the skills are not yet active.

* Assassin Weapon
* Backstab
* Climb

Crafting allows you to use your character's skills in combination with the appropriate raw materials to create new items in the game. These items could then be used, traded or sold.

In addition, the corpses of dead opponents can be looted for valuable items and artifacts that can be traded for money.

Buying, Selling & Trading
Buying
From the very beginning to the very end of the game, you will need to purchase weapons, armor and items to survive and prosper.

You can buy items directly from some NPCs in the game. Such NPCs are usually tending shops or advertising wares.

To buy from an NPC, approach the NPC, right-click on them and click the Buy icon. A purchasing window will appear:

<center></center>

Alternatively, target the NPC and either use the /buy command or click the Buy button in the Shortcuts Window.

At the top left are radio buttons for changing between buy mode and sell mode. Below that is a list of all the types of items for sale from this NPC. If you click on one of those types, a list of all available items and their prices will appear in the area on the right.

Click on an item that you are interested in. If you click the Examine button at the top, you will see more detail about the item. Otherwise, click the Buy button to complete the purchase and transfer the item into your Inventory.

Lastly, your available money is shown in the bottom left corner of the window.

Selling
As you kill monsters and complete quests, you will begin to acquire loot. You can sell unwanted loot to NPC merchants for money.

To sell to an NPC, approach the NPC, right-click on them and click the Sell icon. A selling window will appear:

<center></center>

Alternatively, target the NPC and either use the /sell command or click the Sell button in the Shortcuts

At the top left are radio buttons for changing between sell mode and buy mode. Below that is a list of all the types of items that you can sell to this NPC. If you click on one of those types, a list of the items of that type in your Inventory will appear in the area on the right along with the quantity that you are carrying.

Click on an item that you wish to sell. If you click the Examine button at the top, you will see more detail about the item. Otherwise, click the Sell button to complete the sale and transfer the item from your Inventory. to the NPC, receiving money in return.

Lastly, your current money is shown in the bottom left corner of the window.

Exchanging
Exchanging (also called trading) allows you to give and take items from other players.

To trade with another player, right-click on them and click the Exchange icon. An exchange window will appear:

<center></center>

The exchange window is divided into two halves. The left side represents the items and money that you are giving and the right side indicates the items and money you are receiving.

To put items or money into the exchange window, open your Inventory, click the item you wish to trade and click it again in the exchange window. It will appear in the left hand column.

As you are doing this, the other player will be doing the same. You will see the items and money they are offering you appear in the right hand side of the exchange window.

When you are happy with the trade, click the Exchange at the top and the items and money will be transferred.

Giving
Giving is almost the same as exchanging except you get nothing in return. This is used for giving items to NPCs to complete quests.

To give items or money to an NPC, right-click on the NPC and click the Give icon. An exchange window like the above will appear, however it will only have a left hand column:

<center></center>

Put items into the give window as described under exchanging, then press the Give button to transfer the items from your Inventory to the NPC.

Whenever you see something in the PlaneShift world, you can usually right click on it to bring up an Action Menu.

Depending on the type of object you've clicked on, the icons in the Action Menu will vary. The following is a table of all possible action icons with descriptions of what they do.

Windows
There are several windows you can open and close and have visible on your main play area. The following sections explain each window in detail.

You can right-click on any of the windows to set the fading in and out and the font size of each window:

<center></center>

To move a window, click and hold with your left mouse button on the window's background and drag it around.

To resize a window, click and hold with your left mouse button on the bottom right corner of the window and drag it until it is larger or smaller.

Each window has a corresponding toolbar icon that you can click to show or hide the window. Your window settings will be saved each time you leave the game, so that when you re-join, they are exactly where you left them.

When you first create a new character, you will have three windows on your screen by default: the Chat Window, the Status Window and the Shortcuts.

Options
PlaneShift has many configuration options that can be adjusted by the player. Going into the detail of every one of these options is beyond the scope of this manual, but be aware that you can adjust mouse behavior, the camera, frame rate and more.
<center></center>

Help
PlaneShift has an in-game help system that complements this manual.

Bring up the Help window and then use the category browser on the left to look up a specific topic.

<center></center>

Shortcuts
There are many commands you can enter in the Chat Window to perform certain actions in the game. The shortcuts window is simply a quick way of performing many of these actions.

<center></center>

For example, clicking Who in the shortcuts window will perform a /who command.

The shortcut window buttons are fully configurable. To change the label on a button, or the command that the button executes, right click on the button. In this way, you can add your favorite spells, actions and commands to your shortcut menu.

You can have a shortcut execute as many commands as you like by separating each command with a new line (Enter). For instance:

/target_next_nearest_player
/say Assisting now
/assist
/attack

For a full listing of all the commands you can use in shortcuts, see [reference.html Appendix A, Command Reference].

There are also some special variables you can use in shortcuts that are replaced with the variable value when the shortcut is executed:

Shortcut Variables

| Stops using an item.
|}

Guild
When you first click the Guild toolbar button, you have the option of creating a new guild. If you are already a member of a guild, you will instead see the guild window. If you are the leader of the guild you will have many options for promoting and configuring your guild.

Creating a guild requires a large amount of money, plus a minimum number of members.

The guild window has four separate screens:

Guild Settings
<center></center>

The guild settings screen allows you to set the message of the day that guild members will see when they log in, edit the name of your guild and set your guild's web page.

If you make your guild secret on this screen, it will not be shown in any public lists of available guilds.

Guild Members
<center></center>

The guild members screen allows you to see all the players who are members of your guild, their current guild ranking and their guild points.

You can promote or demote members, invite new members and leave the guild yourself if you wish. For each member, you can create public notes for other members to read, and private notes just for yourself.

Guild Permissions
<center></center>

For large guilds, distributing authority is important. On the guild permissions screen you can set the privileges that guild members have at certain levels of the guild hierarchy.

For example, you might choose that all guild members at level Master or higher can invite new members into the guild. How you organize your own guild is entirely up to you!

Guild Alliance
<center></center>

An Alliance is a way of declaring your guild's support for other guilds.

First, you can create an alliance. Once the alliance is created, you may invite other guilds to join the alliance. At any time you can disband the alliance, or declare another guild to be the leader of the alliance.

Of course, your guild can also be invited into an already existing alliance. You must be the guild leader in order to accept an invitation to join an alliance.

Each guild may only ever be a member of one alliance. If your guild wishes to change alliances, it must first leave its current alliance before joining a new one.

Quest Log
As you encounter NPCs in the game and talk to them, you will be given quests. These quests will be recorded in your quest log for your reference.

<center></center>

The top left area of the quest window displays all of your quests. You can use the Uncompleted and Completed buttons to show only your uncompleted and completed quests respectively.

If you click on a quest, you will see the full description of that quest appear in the top right area.

In addition, you are free to record your own notes on each quest. To do this, enter some text in the notes section at the bottom of the window and press Save to save it.

To give up on a quest, click Discard Quest when the quest is highlighted.

See Section 2.2.5, “How to talk to Non Player Characters (NPCs)” for a tutorial on getting your first quest.

Spell Book
<center></center>

Your Spell Book is where you can view and create spells. In addition, you can click the Combine Glyphs button to view your glyphs, purify them and combine them into spells.

At the top of the screen are the icons for Combine Glyphs Cast Spell. Below that is a box where the full description of your currently selected spell is shown. At the bottom of the screen is a large list of all your spells, their Ways and glyphs.

See Section 2.9, “Magic” for detailed information on spells and spell casting.

Buddy List
As you get further in your adventures in PlaneShift, you will meet many other players, some of whom will become your friends. You can add these friends to your Buddy List.

<center></center>

To add a player to your buddy list, click Add, enter the character's name, and then press OK. To remove another player from your Buddy List, select his or her name in the list and click Remove.

You can send messages quickly to your buddies by highlighting their name in the list and pressing Tell. This is just a shortcut for the /tell command.

When your buddies are logged in, their names appear in green. If they are offline, their names will appear in red.

Group
For adventuring as a party, you can form a Group. To create a new group, open the group window and invite another player into your group. A group will be created automatically, with you as its leader.

<center></center>

At the top of the group window is an indicator of the number of players in your current group. Below that is the hit points and mana of each of the group's members. Double-click on a group member to send them a message.

You can use the Invite button to add more players to your group, or use the Leave button to remove yourself from the group. If the leader of the group leaves or logs off, then another player in the group will become the new leader.

If you are the leader of the group, you have the option of disbanding the entire group. Click Disband to make this happen.

You can use the Group chat channel in the Chat Window to talk and listen exclusively to your group.

Status
Your character's status window is perhaps the most important window to keep visible while playing the game. Primarily, it displays your current health, mana and fatigue levels. If your health ever reaches zero, you will die!

<center></center>

The first three bars in the status window show you your hit points, mana and fatigue respectively. Next shown is the percentage of the experience you require to reach your next level that you have already obtained. Following that is the number of progression points you have collected, allowing you to gain new skills.

Below that, the six combat stance icons allow you to control your aggression level while fighting. From left to right the icons mean: stop attack, bloody, aggressive, normal, defensive and full defensive. See Section 2.8.2, “Stance” for more information.

Spell power allows you to control how much extra energy you want to put into casting spells.

The target area shows you what character you currently have targeted, and that character's hit points.

Finally, there is an area at the bottom of the status window that shows you which camera view you are using, the game frames per second and the current game time.

Petitions
Sometimes there is a problem in the game that you require a GM to fix. This might include reporting a player who is cheating or being abusive, or if you get stuck in a wall and cannot move. A petition is a request to a GM from a player. Your petitions window shows you all your current petitions and the GM assigned to each.

<center></center>

To create a new petition, use the /petition command. Once you have created the petition, it will appear in this window. You can use the Delete button to remove petitions that have been solved or are no longer relevant.

Chat Window
All messages from the server and other players will appear in your chat window. By default, the chat window is visible and is in the bottom right corner of your screen. It is also transparent, so you need to hover your mouse cursor over it to make it become opaque.

<center></center>

Across the top of the chat window are all the message channels that are available. By default, you are listening to all the channels, but you can click on a particular channel to only see messages from your group, for instance.

The main area of the chat window contains all the recent messages in the channel. You can right click on this area for a quick menu filled with common chat phrases.

Under the main area is a text input line where you can click to start typing [reference.html commands]. You can type just the first few letters of a command and press Tab to automatically complete the command name, or display a list of all commands that begin with those letters.

Inventory
Every item your character picks up appears in your character's inventory screen.

<center></center>

In the middle of the window is your character. This image of your character will change to show you holding weapons or shields. This is how other players will see you.

Surrounding your character in the middle are slots for putting weapons and armor onto certain parts of your character's body. From top middle in a clockwise direction, these slots represent: head, neck, shoulders, hands, weapon, knees, feet, waist, shield, forearms, torso and cloak.

In the top left corner is your money. The money icons represent how many Trias, Hexas Octas and Circles you are carrying. Underneath those icons is a representation of your total money in terms of Trias, the total weight of all the items you are carrying and the maximum weight you can carry.

On the middle left of the window are two slots: left finger and right finger. You can put various rings in these slots.

In the bottom left corner is the Mind slot. In this slot, you can equip trade skill recipes or procedures that you can use when you are working on a trade.

To equip an item that you have found or bought, click on it then click on the relevant body section. You will now be wearing or using that item.

Lastly, the two columns of slots on the right represent your entire inventory of objects you are carrying. Just above these slots is an <span class="guibutton">Examine</span> icon. You can drop items on this icon to view them in more detail.

Skills
As your character progresses in the PlaneShift world, he or she will acquire and improve skills. Skills are discussed in-depth in Section 2.5, “Character Statistics” and Section 2.6, “Skills”.

<center></center>

At the top of the skills window is an icon called Buy Skill. Clicking this icon allows you to use experience you have gathered to improve a skill.

Underneath this icon are your current stats. See Section 2.5, “Character Statistics” for full information on your character's statistics.

The next area down indicates your current Hit Points, Mana Points and Fatigue. This is the same display as your Status Window. See Section 2.5, “Character Statistics” for information on these three attributes.

Pressing Modify Description allows you to edit your character's public description. Other players can see your description by right clicking your character and choosing Look.

Finally, there is the list of all your skills. To see a full description of a skill, click on it and a description will appear in the skill description box. The number next to each skill indicates your current level in that skill, and the colored bars represent your progress towards earning the next level in that skill.
Magic
The magical energy usable by the players Yliakum comes from the Azure Crystal. That energy is divided into six Ways of Arcane Lore: Crystal Way, Azure Way, Red Way, Dark Way, Brown Way, and Blue Way.

Each Way has a color and a mental stat associated. The color gives an indication of which of the realms that Way is closer to. The mental stat will give bonuses to the casting of spells that pertain to that Way.

Every Way has one opposing and two that are more close to it:

<center></center>

Each Way is allied with two other Ways, and opposes one other. There are three mental stats (Charisma, Intelligence and Willpower) and three groups of Ways. Each group of Ways is associated with a particular stat.

Each Way has a certain spell domain, so all spells of a particular Way are somewhat related to the same energy and same concepts. That doesn't exclude non-related spells, but they are special cases and are rare.

The Ways
Each way is composed of a set of spells and each spell can be cast by the wizard only with the composition of a set of runes that are called "glyphs".

Crystal Way
Glyph Color

Relationships

: Opposed to Dark Way and friendly with Blue Way and Azure Way.

Focus

: Energy, life and light

Mental Stat

: Charisma

Description

: Gets the pure energy of the Crystal, more directly than all other Ways. Famous for the ability to heal, and cure the most terrible wounds. Someone says that if you reach a great knowledge, you can even bring back a person from death. Nonetheless there are many powerful offensive spells, particularly effective against evil and dark creatures. Warriors and farmers with injured animals are more then happy to see these practitioners around, around most towns people feel the appearance of these practitioners is a bad omen of bad times to come.

Dark Way
Glyph Color

Focus

: Entropy, darkness and death

Mental Stat

: Charisma
Description

: This Way is one that congers more myth then any of the others, its practitioners have a history of being the most innovative of any practitioners of the Ways of Magic, but with all innovation there is both good and bad. It's known that many disasters and epidemics were caused by the adepts of this ancient Way, that holds some spells with terrifying effects. Things can become even worst if you lose the control of its power. Some spells enables the control of horrific creatures, such as undead, demons, spirits. Some enable the caster to control objects and people in a subtle manner, at distance.

Azure Way
Glyph Color

Focus

: Mind, illusion and the element of Air

Mental Stat

: Will

Description

: It's basically a sneaky and insidious energy, that can control the will, the perceptions and the intentions of any intelligent being. It's power comes from the deep knowledge of the mind and the way to influence it, but it relies also on mind potentials to influence the surrounding areas and objects, mainly all that is related to the air element.

Red Way
Glyph Color

Focus

: Strength, chaos and the element of Fire

Mental Stat

: Will

Description

: The spell caster is able to invoke the power of Chaos, and to bend to his will the devastating fury of fire, summoning it for its both damaging and purifying qualities. Spells of the Red Way can also instill courage and strength into companions or other creatures. Most spells in this Way are fire related, and the majority of metal workers have knowledge of it.

Blue Way
Glyph Color

: Opposed to Red Way and friendly with Crystal Way and Brown Way.

Focus

: Divination, purification and the element of Water

Mental Stat

: Intelligence

Description

: Many diseases and poisons will be incurable without the help of the spells of this Way. The offensive and defensive potential of this art, resides mainly on the control of the water element, but also of cold and ice that are strictly related to it. Equally inestimable are the divination spells that can provide very useful information on the past, present and future.

Brown Way
Glyph Color

: Brown

: Opposed to Azure Way and friendly with Blue Way and Dark Way

Focus

: Nature, protective magic and the element of Earth

Mental Stat

: Intelligence

Description

: The glyphs of this Way give to the wizard the ability to cast different protective spells, to summon natural creatures and some monsters and to influence their will. This Way is really close to the element of Earth and can control well all that's related to it. Call nature spirits for assistance, mark themselves and allies as friends of nature.

Glyphs
Glyphs are the base of every spell. They are found in quests, left by ancestors, stolen or purchased. They are found in nature with no real explanation, no one knows exactly why they form, but when some type of energy is strongly present in one place a glyph can appear. Glyphs appear as marks on very different materials from a leaf to the fur of an animal, and usually of any type of rock.

During the centuries many glyphs have been found and studied and so the wizards learned to recognize them. Wizards discovered that each glyph can create a spell effect and that many glyphs can be combined to obtain greater effects. To simplify casting of spells the glyphs are associated with a concept and wizards combine those concepts to form new spells.

It is possible to combine glyphs of different Ways to obtain special and rare spells. In some rare cases glyphs of opposing Ways can be combined.

The glyphs are kept normally in a safe and hidden place by the wizard, losing one can be a great loss as the caster will not be able to cast any spells that require that glyph.

When the spell is cast the wizard must have the glyphs at hand, in his backpack or in the pockets of his robe. Glyphs are not consumed during casting.

Any glyphs you have purchased will appear in your Inventory. and the Glyphs window in your Spell Book.

Before they can be combined, glyphs must be purified.

Purification
Before your character can use a glyph, he or she must purify it.

There is a strong magic link between the wizard and his glyphs. That requires a process of purification when the wizard gains a new glyph that may take some time (hours or one day). After that purification process the link is established and if the wizard dies the glyphs will be destroyed with him (or taken to the Death Realm with him).

A wizard can trade a glyph, but in this case the glyph can be used by the other wizard only after purifying it and after creating a new magic link with it.

To purify a glyph, open the Glyph window from your Spell Book. Pick up the glyph to be purified and drop it on the Purify Glyph< icon. You will see a message in your Chat Window indicating that purification has begun.

Once the purification process has finished, you may use the glyph in combinations to create spells.

Combining Glyphs
Once you have one or more glyphs, you can start to create spells. To combine glyphs into spells, open your Spell Book and click Combine Glyphs.

<center></center>

Shown above is a glyph screen with three glyphs. The six main boxes represent the glyphs for each path of magic. The small box at the bottom is where you put glyphs in order to combine them.

In this example, the Freeze glyph has been placed in the combination box and has formed a valid combination.

When you have a valid combination of glyphs in the bottom box, a description of the spell you have created will appear. You can then click Save Spell to add it to your Spell Book.

Casting Spells
To cast a spell, you must first target a player or NPC if the spell requires it.

Next, determine the Spell Power to use for the spell.

Next, open your Spell Book, select a spell and click Cast Spell.

A window will appear that counts down the time to cast for the spell. When the count down is finished, the spell will be cast.

Casting a spell requires Mana Points. See Section 2.5.4, “Mana Points” for information on Mana Points.

Spell Power
The spell caster can decide to channel more mana into casting by setting the additional spell power, allowing the caster to cast a more powerful spell.

The additional spell power factor is expressed as a percentage value, from 0% to 100%. If you set an additional spell power factor of 50% then you will channel an additional 50% of the base mana requirement for a spell into the spell.

The more you push the additional spell power, the more you must have affinity with the Ways and its associated Mental Stat to control the effects. The power level of the spell is raised by the additional spell power, so the spell will be more powerful.

The use of additional spell power has the side effect that the spell can fizzle or even produce damages to the caster, depending on how much the spell goes out of control.

To set your additional spell power, use the slider in your Status Window.

NPCs
Interacting with NPCs
One of the most important aspects of the world of PlaneShift are the Non-Player Characters ( NPCs). They are intelligent beings controlled by the game itself. They can speak, move, sell and buy objects, fight, sleep, perform a job and so on.

NPCs are the primary means for your character to get quests. With some NPCs, it may be as easy as saying “Give me a quest”, whereas with others, you may have to talk to them for a while to find out what their problems are, so you can offer to solve them.

NPCs may sometimes give you items to use in quests, or may require that you give them an item to complete a quest. You can use the normal trading process to do this.

While speaking to NPCs you should try to use natural language, as if you were speaking to a player, while keeping your phrases simple. So a question like: “quest” doesn't mean anything. If you want to ask for a quest you should say: “Give me a quest, please” or something similar.

So how do you know what to talk to NPCs about? Well, a lot of the fun and discovery in PlaneShift is finding out!

Targeting NPCs
Before you can interact with an NPC, you must have them targeted. To target an NPC, click on them with your middle mouse button, or press 9 to target the nearest NPC. Press 9 repeatedly to cycle through the nearest NPCs.

When you have successfully targeted an NPC, you will see his or her name and hit points displayed in your Status Window.

Use the ‘’’Say’’’ button in your Chat Window to talk to the NPC once they are targeted.

Press Escape to stop targeting an NPC.
Common phrases
When dealing with an NPC you should remember that he or she will normally answer standard questions such as:

* Greeting words like: Hi”, ‘’Hello”, etc. Most NPCs will answer you back with a greeting, and will perhaps tell you how they are feeling or give you an indication of their troubles.
* How are you?” type of phrases. Usually, the NPC will tell you something about themselves and may reveal some useful information, such objects they require or tasks they wish performed.
* “Tell me about yourself” and similar. With this you are asking about the NPC's profession, role in the society or something about what he or she likes. This may also reveal some useful information.
* “Goodbye”. A way to politely finish a conversation with an NPC.
* ‘’I would like a job”, “I would like a beer”, “I would like a sword” sorts of phrases. Don't just ask “job” or “sword” because it will not work. The phrase must be meaningful.

You should use one word answers only when the NPC formulates a direct question such as: “Do you want a sword or an axe”? In this case you should answer either “sword” or “axe”.
Quests
NPCs are the best way to get quests. They can ask you to discover something, to bring an item, to perform a task.

When you receive a quest, it will appear in your Quest Log.
Don't spoil the fun of others
By publishing on the web quest solutions you are lowering the realism of the game and you are spoiling the fun of other people. We are not against players teaming up and giving hints to each other, but we think that this should be done in game, with role-playing. Having a web page that simply list what to do to achieve more money and experience in less time should be considered something against the role-playing aspect of the game.

What you can do is to join a Guild or Group and share information with other members, possibly depending on their rank. You may also accept in your own guild players that have at least completed a certain number of quests to prove their dedication to the game. Alternatively, you can use quest completion as a benchmark for promoting players within your own guild.

Cheating
What is cheating?
The word "Cheating" identifies, in computer games, a number of actions that a player can take to make the game easier for himself. Cheating is usually targeted at solving quests faster, gaining more money/resources/items faster, becoming invulnerable, etc... While cheating, the player uses workaround or tools that the game designer didn't create for him, basically spoiling the original creation of the designers.

Isn't cheating useful?
In single player games surely it is. It happens many times to be in an adventure game stuck at a certain point and no way to get around it, or to be facing an incredibly powerful monster in a first person shooter game, and have no way to solve it just because it's too hard. In those games cheats allows you to remove the issue, and to go further, enjoying even much the game since you removed the frustration of not going further. Since those are single player games the effects of cheating are just on yourself, so you can decide to cheat without any other impact.

Great! So can we cheat in PlaneShift?
In games like PlaneShift things are extremely different. You are not playing alone and using a cheat is not solely an advantage for you. An online role playing game is mainly based on the community of players and on the realism and balance that the simulated world recreates.

Like in any good movie or book, if you don't believe in the story being told, it will simply look silly and pointless. The same is for role playing games. These are based on imagination.

There are two main ways to capture the imagination of players, giving a more immersive experience, having them believe in the story behind the game and in the game itself:

* Realism
* Balance

Realism is primarily felt thanks to detailed graphics and interaction with other players . If someone cheats, it's like breaking a mirror with a beautiful image reflected in it. His actions will seem fake, the world will seem fake, everything will look again like a simple game, the beauty of believing in a simulated medieval world fades away quite fast. In a game where imagination is of primary importance, breaking realism is a real crime.

Balance in achievements of the players' community is what gives a defined "space" to each player. Balance tells him how much effort he needs to reach a particular objective (ranks, money, crystals, items, quests...). Cheating completely destroys balance in game and consequently reduce the will of players to reach certain objectives and their affection to the game. It also reduces realism.

Given the two points above cheating in PlaneShift is absolutely not allowed.

A player that cheats, has not understood what a role playing game is. If you believe in the simulated world, you cannot cheat, because you cannot break world rules.

A player that cheats is considered to disrupt the experience of other good players since he breaks realism and balance. He will not be tolerated in our online community.

What is considered cheating in PlaneShift?
Even if common sense is the best judge on what's considered cheating, it's good to give you some guidelines on what we consider cheating in PlaneShift.

As a general rule we can say that we consider cheating any voluntary action that a player takes hacking the client, hacking the server, publishing/using quests solutions on the web or exploiting a game bug to:

# gain an advantage on other players OR
# break realism of the game for other players

Some common hacks are for example: move faster than all other players, highlight hidden items/monsters, walk through solid objects or fly, change lighting to see in darkness, etc...

The "voluntary" part is quite important. The game can have bugs, so it may happen, for example, that one simple dagger present in your inventory is transformed into a very powerful item due to a bug. This case is obviously not considered cheating, you just have to report the fact to us (info@planeshift.it). Keeping the item without notifying the developers is considered cheating. The wrong item will be removed, and you will be rewarded for spotting the bug with another item or in-game money.

How you can identify cheaters, and what happens to them?
In Molecular Blue version we had just few tools to spot cheaters, but in next version we have a lot more tools. Basically the server logs all activities that are not considered legal, or are suspicious. The log is then manually read by developers and actions will be taken.

We do not tolerate cheating in any way, considering it a theft against all other players and a disruption of the work done by developers. For this reason cheaters have this destiny;

* their chars are deleted with all their possessions
* their IP address is banned from our servers. This means they cannot connect anymore
* they are banned from the forums
* they are banned from IRC channels

The duration of the ban depends on the gravity of the action. For evident and continuous cheating the ban is permanent, life-time.

It's important to note that we do not take actions immediately on a cheater. We collect info on him with the objective to stop all his actions at proper time. Cheaters tend to have more characters, party with other cheaters and so on. If a cheater is detected and flagged as a cheater, action can be taken against them even months later.
I'm a good role-player, is there any risk to be identified as a cheater by mistake?
Absolutely not. As we said our actions are not taken immediately when a potential cheat is detected and the ban is done when massively evident proof is against a cheater.

Here is some advice for you:

* Play the game with passion
* Respect other players
* Do not voluntarily try to cheat
* If something strange happens to your character contact us
* If you identify someone cheating contact us, he has no rights to disrupt your in game experience
I'm a developer, and I want to test hacks or mods, may I do that?
You should never test hacks on an official server. Download the CVS version of the PlaneShift server and test your hacks or mods locally, on your private server. Then report to us your findings, you will be rewarded if you find any good hack and a solution to it.

Modifications to the client content (graphics, sounds, ...) are not allowed by PS License. In particular we will not tolerate players using mods to connect to an official server if those allow cheating, or modify the visual aspects of the game or its design. If you want to add levels or graphics to PlaneShift you are more then welcome to participate in our development.
